Six critical areas for evaluating AI security as an MSP

Your clients are already using AI. Employees are drafting emails with Copilot, analyzing data in ChatGPT and automating tasks with GenAI tools built into the systems they already use. Much of that activity is happening outside your formal security controls, and that creates a new risk layer that traditional tools were not built to handle.

For MSPs, the question is no longer whether clients will adopt AI, but how to secure that adoption in a way that fits your business model, scales across multiple client environments and addresses threats specific to AI: prompt injection attacks, shadow AI and uncontrolled data flows.

    What AI security actually means
AI security is about monitoring, controlling and protecting how AI is used across an organization. For MSPs, the most relevant scenarios are two: consumer scenarios, where employees interact directly with AI tools like ChatGPT or Copilot, and builder scenarios, where AI is integrated into applications and workflows. In both cases the risk is the same: sensitive data moving through channels you cannot see.

What to look for when evaluating
Many AI security solutions are built for enterprise security teams, not for MSPs managing multiple client environments in parallel. That shows in how they are constructed: complex onboarding, heavy integration requirements and pricing that does not support a scalable service delivery model.

When comparing solutions, six areas should guide your evaluation:

Multitenant architecture and manageability - Can you manage policies per client, per environment or per department, all from a single console? What does onboarding look like?

Data protection across AI workflows - How is sensitive data identified and protected across prompts, API calls and AI-driven workflows? Can policies be applied consistently across client environments?

Visibility into AI usage - Does the solution provide insight into which AI tools are actually being used, including unsanctioned shadow AI, and can you operationalize that data?

Monetization and service delivery - Does the solution support a scalable service model with flexible pricing, without creating heavy operational overhead?

Governance and compliance - Is there support for role-based access control, audit logs and frameworks such as NIST AI RMF, the EU AI Act or ISO 42001?

Prompt risks and harmful inputs - How are prompt injection and other forms of misuse handled? Is that control integrated into broader security workflows?

    Acronis GenAI Protection
Acronis GenAI Protection is built for the MSP business model and addresses primarily consumer and builder scenarios. The solution takes an endpoint-first approach, providing visibility, control and protection across clients' AI environments: it discovers and monitors AI applications including shadow AI, inspects prompts for sensitive information and prevents data from being shared with unsanctioned tools, and blocks harmful prompts and prompt injection attacks.

AI adoption is accelerating faster than security strategies can keep up. MSPs that can close that gap will deliver more value and can offer AI security as a new, scalable service.
