Acronis introducing agentless backup for Nutanix AHV

oliviahiljegren6

Today, Acronis announced the latest enhancement to Acronis Cyber Protect Cloud: agentless backup for Nutanix AHV. With this new capability, MSPs can protect Nutanix-based workloads simply by deploying a virtual appliance — no separate agent installation required inside each virtual machine. This innovation is part of Acronis ongoing commitment to deliver broad, flexible cyber protection across all major virtual and cloud infrastructure platforms.

Why Nutanix AHV matters

Market analysts forecast the hyperconverged infrastructure (HCI) market to grow by more than 20% CAGR over the next few years. Nutanix, the leading HCI, has been gaining significant momentum, fueled in part by industry changes such as the VMware acquisition by Broadcom. As more organizations turn to Nutanix AHV for a simpler, highly scalable virtualization environment, managed service providers (MSPs) need reliable, easy-to-deploy backup and recovery options that support this modern infrastructure option.

Nutanix’s AHV virtualization is quickly becoming a go-to choice for businesses seeking a hypervisor that is tightly integrated with their HCI stack. Nutanix holds a strong share in the HCI market, largely because of its no-compromise approach to performance, ease of management, and resilient infrastructure. With VMware’s acquisition shifting the virtualization market landscape, more organizations are either evaluating or actively migrating to Nutanix AHV. This places an urgent need on MSPs to provide data protection solutions compatible with Nutanix AHV environments.

How Acronis agentless backup for Nutanix AHV works

Traditional backup solutions often require installing an agent inside each VM, leading to added complexity, resource overhead and potential security concerns. The January 2025 release of Acronis Cyber Protect Cloud streamlines MSP operations:

  1. Lightweight appliance: Instead of in-guest agents, a single virtual appliance is deployed to the Nutanix AHV cluster.

  2. API-based protection: The appliance communicates with AHV via the Nutanix backup API to back up Windows and Linux VMs seamlessly.

  3. Flexible storage options: Protect workloads by backing up to Acronis Cloud Storage, Nutanix Files / Objects, or even to other public clouds.

  4. File-level recovery: Granular recovery options let you restore files and folders without having to bring back the entire VM.

With this agentless approach, MSPs save time on deployment and ongoing management, while delivering fast, high-performance backups for their clients’ Nutanix environments.

Key benefits for Acronis partners

Reliability and certification

Acronis agentless backup solution has been built and validated against Nutanix AHV. “Nutanix  Ready” certification is pending, giving you and your clients assurance that Acronis adheres to best practices and meets rigorous quality standards.

Simplicity and efficiency

By eliminating the need to install and maintain backup agents on each VM, you reduce administrative overhead. A single virtual appliance handles backup tasks across the entire Nutanix AHV cluster, streamlining ongoing operations.

Workload mobility

Acronis has long been recognized for enabling complete hypervisor mobility — a feature that’s especially compelling in today’s hybrid-cloud, multicloud world. With it, you can migrate workloads between physical, virtual and cloud environments with minimal effort. That includes cross-platform recoveries from Nutanix AHV to other hypervisors (e.g., VMware, Hyper-V, Azure VMs) and vice versa.

Support for all major hypervisors

Whether you’re protecting VMware vSphere, Microsoft Hyper-V, Red Hat Virtualization, Oracle VM, Azure VMs or now, Nutanix AHV, you can manage backups for all these environments under single pane of glass with Acronis Cyber Protect Cloud. This consistency eases complexity for MSPs that serve clients with diverse infrastructures.

Multitier, multitenant management

Acronis Cyber Protect Cloud is purpose built for MSPs. Acronis platform offers centralized management, branding options, usage-based billing and API integrations with leading RMM and PSA tools. Extending protection to Nutanix AHV deployments is as simple as adding the new environment to your existing tenant structure and applying your protection plans.

What’s next?

Acronis continues to expand their hypervisor integrations to give you more flexibility and control over your clients’ data protection strategies. With the addition of Nutanix AHV, Acronis Cyber Protect Cloud now offers a truly unified approach to protecting modern, diverse IT environments.

If you’re an MSP looking to add Nutanix AHV data protection services, or if you already manage Nutanix deployments for your clients, you can now leverage Acronis’ world-class cyber protection platform that’s agentless, easy to deploy and is backed by Acronis’ industry-leading reliability.
